Kaernest

Kaernest is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game and setting focused on consequence, culture, and continuity.
It is a nobledark world shaped by long memory, imperfect empires, and the quiet weight of history.
Heroes matter in Kaernest, but they do not exist outside the world’s systems. What they do leaves marks, and those marks endure.

The world has not seen a true summer in over four hundred years.
Civilizations have adapted, hardened, or broken beneath that endless cycle.
Empires rise not because they are just, but because they are persistent.
And in the shadows of all of it, tyrannical dragons move events with patience, cruelty, and long perspective, serving as one of the great opposing forces of the age.

Kaernest is about people navigating that world.
Not chosen ones standing above it, but individuals making difficult choices inside it.

The Setting

Kaernest is a world defined by layered cultures rather than universal truths.
Species are not cosmetic, and nations are not interchangeable.
Each people carries a distinct relationship to history, environment, and power, and those relationships matter in play.

The setting supports grounded travel stories, political intrigue, religious tension, frontier survival, and long-form campaigns centered on a single region or community.
Magic exists, but it is not casual. Faith shapes societies. Technology advances unevenly. Old mistakes echo forward.

While the tone can grow grim, Kaernest is not a hopeless world.
Hope exists in relationships, in community, and in the stubborn refusal to let cruelty be the final word.

The System

The Kaernest system is classless and level-less.
Characters are defined by their Species, Backgrounds, Attributes, Skills, and Gifts, not by rigid advancement tracks.

The rules emphasize: - Broad competence over extreme specialization.
- Success with consequence rather than binary outcomes.
- Narrative permission over mechanical gating.

Most actions are possible for most characters.
Training, Gifts, and preparation do not unlock actions so much as make them more reliable, safer, or more impactful.

At the heart of the system is a simple distinction:

Success answers: Did you get what you wanted right now?
Impact answers: What did this change about the world?

The Core System page expands on how this philosophy is applied at the table.

Characters and Growth

Characters in Kaernest grow outward rather than upward.
They gain new skills, deepen old ones, form connections, acquire obligations, and leave reputations behind them.

Advancement is driven by play rather than combat alone.
Who your character helps, betrays, protects, or angers matters as much as what they defeat.

Backgrounds and Gifts reflect where a character comes from and how they engage with the world, not just what they are good at mechanically.
Over time, those origins can evolve, fracture, or be abandoned entirely.

Conflict and Consequence

Combat in Kaernest is dangerous, but it is not the only meaningful form of conflict.
Intrigue, reputation, negotiation, and community pressure are equally important tools and threats.

Violence tends to leave scars.
Social actions can reshape entire regions.
Power draws attention, whether wanted or not.

The system is designed to support partial success, difficult choices, and escalating consequences rather than clean victories.

A Living Project

Kaernest is a long-running personal project that has evolved through many iterations, inspirations, and playtests.
This version represents a focused, actively developed ruleset and setting, built with the intention of long-term play and expansion.

While the system continues to be refined, its core philosophy and structure are stable.

Where to Go Next

Kaernest rewards curiosity.
The more you explore it, the more it remembers you.
