Human Appearance and Physiology¶
Humans are newcomers to Kaernest, and it shows. Unlike the other Peoples, whose bodies reflect long adaptation to element, land, or sky, Humans appear unfinished — broadly capable, but never specialized. Wherever they are found, they stand out not for extremes, but for their lack of them.
A Human is immediately recognizable to the Peoples of Kaernest, even when dressed, trained, or socialized among them. They lack the elemental markers, sensory adaptations, or physical excesses that define the native species. In many regions, a Human's presence is notable simply because it is rare.
General Build and Variation¶
Human bodies are moderately proportioned, neither especially tall nor especially compact by the standards of Kaernest. Their frames are adaptable but unremarkable: capable of endurance, but not exceptional stamina; capable of strength, but rarely overwhelming; capable of agility, but never effortless.
Variation among Humans is significant, but most of it reflects environment and upbringing rather than ancestry. A Human raised among the Dazhdvog tends toward denser musculature and thicker clothing habits. One raised among the Fluvarri often develops long, lean lines and careful movement near water. Verdanni-raised Humans adopt balance, posture, and grace that can feel almost plant-like, though never truly so.
Despite this variation, Humans never fully take on the physical traits of their host Peoples. Adaptation shapes habit and health, not biology.
Sensory Limits¶
Human senses are serviceable but limited. They see well in daylight and poorly in true darkness. They hear clearly, but not with the precision of Kampanni or the directional acuity of Qnassi. Their sense of smell is weak by Dazhdvog standards and imprecise compared to Fluvarri sensitivity to air and water.
This sensory narrowness contributes to how Humans are perceived: cautious, sometimes slow to react, often reliant on tools, light, or warning rather than instinct. Humans who survive long-term among other Peoples do so by compensating through preparation rather than perception.
Adaptation Without Transformation¶
Humans are capable of cultural adaptation, but not physical transformation. Living among Kampanni does not grant flight. Living among Fluvarri does not grant gills. Living among Verdanni does not grant seasonal coloration or plant resilience.
What Humans do develop instead are coping strategies: they learn to read others' cues, to rely on gear, to move deliberately, and to avoid environments where their limitations are most exposed.
This creates a subtle physiological divide between Humans and the native Peoples. Humans often appear slightly overdressed, slightly over-equipped, or slightly over-prepared — a necessity in a world not built for them.
Health and Resilience¶
Human health is variable. They lack the innate resistances of many Peoples, but their bodies respond well to treatment, rest, and careful living. They are particularly receptive to healing magic, herbal medicine, and protective rituals, though they do not regenerate quickly on their own.
Injuries that a Qnassi might ignore or a Dazhdvog might endure can be serious for a Human. As a result, Humans tend to value caution, planning, and retreat more than bravado. This reputation for fragility is not entirely fair, but it is persistent.
Visual Identity¶
Because Humans lack defining physical markers, they often rely on clothing, posture, and ornamentation to signal identity. Many adopt elements of their host culture's dress, though rarely perfectly. A Human wearing Verdanni silks or Dazhdvog stonework never quite looks native, and that difference is usually obvious to those who know what to look for.
This visual ambiguity can work in a Human's favor. They are often underestimated. They are rarely mistaken for something more dangerous than they are.
Being Seen¶
In Kaernest, Humans are noticed. Not because they dominate, but because they are out of place.
They are the only People who consistently look like guests — sometimes welcome, sometimes tolerated, sometimes mistrusted. Their bodies reflect that truth: capable, adaptable, but always shaped by a world that was not made for them.
