Alchemy Methods¶
Alchemy is the art of coercing living systems into temporarily useful behaviors through cultivation, refinement, and application. Alchemy does not cast effects. It prepares states. Each Alchemy Method represents a distinct way of interfering with biology, chemistry, or physiology. A character gains access to a Method through Gifts, training, or species-specific capability. Learning a Method grants permission, not mastery.
Core Traits of All Alchemy Methods¶
All Alchemical preparations share these traits: - Prepared in advance, not cast live - Limited lifespan; preparations degrade or expire - Effects emerge over time or under stress - Failure produces side effects, not Burn - Repeated use creates dependency, tolerance, or adaptation
Alchemy interacts with Ka during preparation, not during use.
Adaptation¶
Adaptation alters how a system responds to conditions. This Method reshapes tolerance rather than output.
What It Does¶
- increases resistance to toxins or environments
- alters metabolism or respiration
- enables survival in extreme conditions
- temporarily mimics traits of other organisms
What It Risks¶
- permanent physiological changes
- mutation or drift
- loss of baseline function
- long-term incompatibility with normal conditions
Adaptation is the most "Verdanni" Method.
It is slow, subtle, and dangerous in the long run.
Disruption¶
Disruption interferes with normal biological coordination. This Method creates dysfunction rather than enhancement.
What It Does¶
- causes paralysis, tremors, or disorientation
- induces hallucination or sensory confusion
- disrupts coordination or balance
- interferes with concentration or action
What It Risks¶
- unpredictable severity
- cascading system failures
- lasting neurological effects
- ethical and legal consequences Disruption is control through instability.
Mimicry¶
Mimicry introduces foreign biological behaviors into a system. This Method is not transformation, but imitation.
What It Does¶
- grants temporary traits drawn from other organisms
- enables secretion, adhesion, venom analogs, or regeneration-like effects
- alters skin, glands, or reflexes briefly
What It Risks¶
- rejection or immune response
- partial integration
- mutation
- irreversible changes if overstressed Mimicry is where Alchemy edges closest to Blood Magic, but never crosses it.
Stimulation¶
Stimulation forces a system to exceed its normal operating limits. This Method accelerates, amplifies, or overrides natural inhibitors.
What It Does¶
- increases strength, speed, or endurance
- suppresses pain or exhaustion
- heightens reflexes or aggression
- sharpens focus or awareness
What It Risks¶
- physical damage once the effect ends
- severe fatigue or collapse
- addiction and dependency
- long-term degradation of the stressed system
Stimulation never creates capacity.
It borrows against the future.
Suppression¶
Suppression dampens or inhibits biological responses. This Method reduces or silences processes that are normally automatic.
What It Does¶
- dulls pain, fear, or sensation
- reduces inflammation or swelling
- induces sleep or unconsciousness
- suppresses nausea, panic, or shock
What It Risks¶
- masking serious injury
- delayed system failure
- rebound effects
- dependency on artificial regulation
Suppression is safe until it isn't.
It hides problems instead of solving them.
Method Boundaries (Very Important)¶
Alchemy Methods cannot: - instantly heal wounds - restore lost limbs - overwrite identity - create life from nothing - impose obedience or belief
If an effect: - reinforces structure → Vitalis - alters perception or belief → Glamour - rewrites tissue magically → Blood Magic - projects force → Evocation
…it is not Alchemy.
Verdanni and Alchemy¶
Verdanni possess a unique advantage: - accelerated cultivation - controlled growth of reagents - access to living materials others cannot sustain
Verdanni Alchemy feels effortless not because it is safer, but because they control the supply chain. Their true sorcery is growth.
