Dazhdvog Appearance and Physiology¶
The Dazhdvog are not shaped like animals wearing stone, nor like statues that have learned to walk. They are living stone beings, formed of layered mineral, crystal growth, and dense earthen matter, animated by will, memory, and purpose rather than blood alone.
At a distance, a Dazhdvog silhouette is broadly humanoid: two arms, two legs, an upright posture, and a balanced, deliberate gait. Up close, their bodies reveal a complexity that defies simple categorization. No two Dazhdvog look the same, and none appear fully symmetrical. Their forms reflect the geology of the regions they come from, and the lives they have lived.
General Build¶
Dazhdvog are typically short to average in height, but appear much larger due to their density and presence. Their bodies are thick-set and grounded, with broad shoulders, solid torsos, and limbs that look carved rather than grown. They do not appear bulky in a muscular sense, but structurally substantial, as though weight itself is part of their anatomy.
Movement is slow, controlled, and economical. A Dazhdvog rarely makes unnecessary gestures. When they do move quickly, it feels intentional and decisive, not sudden or frantic.
Surface and Texture¶
A Dazhdvog’s body is composed of stone-like material, but this stone is alive. Their surfaces range from smooth and polished to rough and stratified, depending on age, environment, and personal history.
Common textures include:
-
layered stone plates resembling sedimentary rock
-
crystalline veins running beneath the surface
-
gem-like nodules at joints, temples, or along the spine
-
faintly metallic flecks or mineral inclusions
Coloration tends toward earth tones, but is rarely dull. Greys, browns, ochres, slate blues, deep greens, and muted reds are common, often shot through with veins of quartz, amber, jade, or darker crystal. Older Dazhdvog often develop subtle luster or translucence in places where crystal growth has emerged over time.
These features are not decorative. They are records of pressure, environment, and endurance.
Face and Features¶
Dazhdvog faces are expressive, but not soft. Their facial structures appear carved rather than formed by flesh. Cheekbones, brows, and jawlines are angular or faceted, with visible planes rather than curves.
They do not have hair in a mammalian sense. Instead, some Dazhdvog develop mineral growths along the scalp, jawline, or temples. These may resemble crystal clusters, ridges of stone, or layered mineral sheets. Others have smooth, bare stone heads marked only by natural striations.
Eyes are deep-set and luminous. Rather than whites and pupils, their eyes often appear as:
-
polished stone cores
-
glowing crystal lenses
-
dark mineral pools with internal light
Eye color is commonly tied to internal mineral composition and often intensifies with emotion or focused will. When a Dazhdvog is angered, resolved, or deeply concentrating, their eyes may glow faintly, not with magic, but with directed presence.
They do not blink often.
Physiology and Internal Structure¶
Dazhdvog do not have organs in the way most organic Peoples do. Instead, their bodies are composed of layered mineral matrices that perform equivalent functions. They do not bleed, but damage can fracture or chip their bodies, requiring careful repair rather than healing in the biological sense.
Despite their stone composition, Dazhdvog are warm to the touch, though never hot. Their internal processes are slow, deliberate, and resilient. They do not tire easily, but once exhausted, recovery is measured in rest and stillness rather than sleep alone.
They breathe, but slowly. They eat, but sparingly. Food is processed more for symbolic and sustaining value than caloric necessity. Long periods without food do not distress them, but isolation from community and memory does.
Senses¶
Dazhdvog senses are tuned toward continuity rather than immediacy.
Their hearing is excellent for low frequencies and vibrations, allowing them to sense movement through stone, earth, and structures. Their sense of touch is extraordinarily refined, capable of detecting minute changes in pressure, texture, and structural integrity.
Their vision is steady and patient. They see well in low light, but do not rely on sharp motion detection. Instead, they excel at noticing what has changed, what does not belong, and what has been disturbed.
Vision and Infra-Perception¶
Dazhdvog possess infravision, often described by outsiders as heat-vision, but understood by the Dazhdvog themselves as stone-sight.
Rather than perceiving heat as glowing outlines alone, Dazhdvog sense thermal presence layered over structure. Living bodies appear as warm silhouettes within colder stone and air, but the true strength of their vision lies in contrast, not brightness. Subtle changes in temperature reveal movement, breath, blood flow, and even emotional agitation in nearby creatures.
This sense functions naturally in total darkness and underground environments, where surface light is unreliable or meaningless. It allows Dazhdvog to navigate tunnels, caverns, and stone halls with confidence, even where no visible light exists.
Infravision is not merely ocular. It is tied to the Dazhdvog’s entire sensory awareness. Heat gradients are felt through the eyes, skin, and internal stone layers simultaneously, creating a holistic perception of space. A Dazhdvog does not simply see warmth; they register it as presence.
In bright surface light, infra-vision does not vanish, but recedes into the background. Dazhdvog often squint or shade their eyes in strong sunlight, not from pain, but from sensory overload. Underground, however, their perception is calm, steady, and precise.
This ability is essential to their survival and culture. Without infravision, the deep places they call home would be hostile and disorienting. With it, stone becomes readable, and darkness becomes merely another layer of information.
Aging and Physical Change¶
Dazhdvog do not wrinkle or sag with age. They accrete.
As they grow older, their bodies gain additional layers, inclusions, or crystal growths. These changes are gradual and irreversible. Older Dazhdvog often appear heavier, more angular, and more complex in form, as though history itself has settled into their bodies.
Scars are permanent, but respected. A repaired fracture or filled crack is not hidden. It is part of who they are.
Presence¶
More than any single physical trait, what defines a Dazhdvog is presence. When one enters a space, they feel anchored. Conversations slow. Movements become more deliberate. Others instinctively trust them to remain where they stand.
This is not intimidation. It is the quiet assurance of something that has endured long enough to know it will endure again.
