GM Appendix: House Nefrassa Under Pressure¶
House Nefrassa does not react quickly. This is often mistaken for weakness.
In reality, the house responds to threats through redefinition rather than resistance. When pressured, Nefrassa asks a single question: “How does this become tradition?” Once answered, the threat is absorbed, redirected, or outlasted.
How Nefrassa Defends Itself¶
Nefrassa avoids direct confrontation unless survival is at stake. Instead, it employs layered, non-obvious defenses:
-
Legitimacy Shielding
Attacks on Nefrassa often provoke social backlash among the Sektarri. Even rivals hesitate to be seen as dismantling tradition itself. -
Procedural Entrenchment
When imperial reforms threaten Nefrassa’s interests, the house embeds itself into the implementation process. By the time opposition notices, removing Nefrassa would require undoing accepted precedent. -
Distributed Authority
No single individual holds enough power to collapse the house if removed. Eliminating leadership creates inconvenience, not chaos.
Failure States (GM Guidance)¶
House Nefrassa does not collapse dramatically. Its failure states are slow and cultural:
-
Loss of Relevance
If ignored for too long, Nefrassa becomes ceremonial rather than authoritative. This is the most dangerous outcome for the Empire, even if it appears benign. -
Internal Fracture
Younger members may push for adaptation faster than elders allow. This can create splinter traditions, each claiming legitimacy. -
Forced Modernization
If compelled to fully align with imperial doctrine, Nefrassa survives but becomes hollow. The Sektarri feel the loss even if they cannot articulate it.
How Nefrassa Uses the PCs¶
House Nefrassa prefers agents who:
-
Can act without drawing attention
-
Understand obligation over reward
-
Accept ambiguity without explanation
PCs working for Nefrassa are rarely given explicit objectives. Instead, they are placed in situations where the “correct” outcome preserves continuity.
Failure is not punished harshly. Recklessness is.
When Nefrassa Becomes Dangerous¶
Nefrassa only becomes overtly dangerous when:
-
The Pharaoh’s legitimacy is threatened
-
Sektarri cultural identity is at risk of fracture
-
Another house attempts to erase precedent entirely
In such moments, Nefrassa will abandon subtlety and invoke every ritual, alliance, and moral debt it possesses. This escalation is rare, but when it happens, other houses take notice immediately.
GM Advice¶
Use House Nefrassa when you want:
-
Pressure without visible antagonists
-
Consequences that unfold over sessions, not encounters
-
Patronage that tests player values rather than combat ability
Nefrassa is not a hammer.
It is a foundation.
If the foundation cracks, the Empire doesn’t fall.
It shifts.
