A Kobold Nest is not a single encounter.
It is an escalating environmental threat created by Blooded Qnassi behavior.

Kobold Nests explain: - why roads are abandoned, - why villages vanish quietly, - why clearing an area "mostly" never works.

A Kobold Nest is dangerous because it does not stop acting when ignored.


What a Kobold Nest Is

A Kobold Nest is: - a breeding site, - a supply cache, - a defensive maze, - and a social structure.

It is not always underground.
It is wherever kobolds can hide, breed, and harass safely.

Common nest locations: - collapsed tunnels, - abandoned buildings, - mine shafts, - sewer systems, - ruined infrastructure, - dense root networks, - canyon walls and gullies.


Nest Growth Stages (GM Dial)

Kobold Nests escalate predictably if left unchecked.


Stage I: Presence

Signs - scattered tracks, - missing livestock, - thrown stones, - poisoned vermin, - unexplained noises.

Threat - lone kobolds or scouts, - harassment without commitment, - probing attacks.

GM Guidance This stage is survivable and avoidable.
Players who investigate early gain leverage.


Stage II: Establishment

Signs - crude traps, - scorpion remains, - poison-tainted water, - organized ambush points, - warning sounds or signals.

Threat - kobold packs, - coordinated harassment, - supply disruption, - poisoned injuries.

GM Guidance Travel becomes dangerous.
Ignoring the nest now creates long-term cost.


Stage III: Infestation

Signs - multiple tunnels or exits, - breeding chambers, - food stockpiles, - evidence of leadership, - repeated attacks on multiple routes.

Threat - constant pressure, - night raids, - swarms, - attrition warfare.

GM Guidance This is no longer a "monster problem."
It is a regional issue.


Stage IV: Expansion

Signs - satellite nests, - coordinated pack movements, - attacks on fortified locations, - forced evacuations.

Threat - territory denial, - economic collapse, - political response, - scorched-earth solutions.

GM Guidance At this stage, eradication is costly.
Abandonment may be the rational choice.


Nest Defenses

Kobold Nests defend themselves indirectly.

Common features include: - narrow passages, - false collapses, - dead ends, - poison reservoirs, - elevated attack points, - scorpion pits or lures.

The environment does most of the work.


Swarm Interaction

Kobolds emerging from a nest: - always act as swarms, - benefit from terrain familiarity, - retreat into tunnels rather than fight to the death.

Destroying individuals does not reduce nest threat
unless breeding capacity or access points are removed.


Poison Saturation (Optional Rule)

Areas near an active nest may suffer ambient poison risk: - contaminated water, - tainted vermin, - lingering venom on surfaces.

This turns every encounter into resource drain, not just combat.


Morale & Collapse

A Kobold Nest collapses when: - breeding chambers are destroyed, - food stores are burned, - leadership is eliminated, - access tunnels are sealed, - fire or flooding is used effectively.

Partial success often triggers temporary retreat, not destruction.

Kobolds will return if conditions allow.


Dragon Context (GM Knowledge)

Most Kobold Nests are: - feral, - abandoned remnants of past dragon campaigns, - no longer under direct control.

However: - sudden nest coordination, - disciplined expansion, - strategic placement

may indicate renewed dragon interest.

This should alarm the GM.


Using a Kobold Nest in Play

A Kobold Nest is best used as: - a looming background threat, - a ticking clock, - a consequence of neglect, - a reason regions empty out.

It rewards: - early action, - decisive solutions, - environmental thinking.

It punishes: - delay, - piecemeal clearing, - overconfidence.


Player-Facing Rumors

Safe to share. Incomplete by design.

  • "You can't clear them all."
  • "They come back if you leave tunnels open."
  • "Fire works, but it ruins everything."
  • "Poison spreads farther than you think."
  • "If they're breeding, it's already bad."
  • "Nobody wants to live near a nest."

All of these are true enough to matter.


Core Principle

A Kobold Nest is not defeated in battle.

It is solved, contained, or abandoned.

Ignoring it is choosing the worst option.
