Verdanni Appearance Physiology

Verdanni Appearance and Physiology

Verdanni resemble elves only at a distance. Closer inspection reveals that their bodies are not flesh shaped like plants, but plants shaped like people. Their forms are grown rather than born, cultivated rather than assembled, and this distinction is immediately apparent to anyone who spends time among them.

A Verdanni body is a living construction of fiber, sap, bark, leaf, and bloom. Muscle exists, but it behaves more like tightly bound vine or layered root than meat. Skin may resemble smooth leaf-vein patterns, polished bark, soft moss, or waxy petals depending on lineage and environment. When wounded, Verdanni bleed sap or resin instead of blood, and their injuries scar like knotted wood or thickened growth rings.

They are warm to the touch, but not hot. Their bodies hold heat the way soil does, slowly absorbing and slowly releasing it.

Height, Build, and Silhouette

Verdanni vary widely in height and build. Some are tall and willowy, others short and dense, but most have learned that blending in among Humans and Dazhdvog is socially advantageous. As a result, many Verdanni intentionally cultivate proportions that sit comfortably within that shared range.

Their silhouettes tend to be clean and deliberate. Verdanni rarely grow excess bulk without purpose. Shoulders are often narrow, limbs elongated, posture upright but relaxed. They move with an economy of motion that suggests stability rather than speed.

When standing still, Verdanni appear rooted. When they move, it feels intentional.

Seasonal Expression

All Verdanni express the seasons physically, though the degree varies by individual and region. This is not a cosmetic choice. It is a physiological response tied to light, temperature, moisture, and cultural practice.

In spring, Verdanni may develop blossoms, soft new leaves, pale greens, or floral coloration along hands, faces, or hair-like growths. Summer deepens those colors into lush greens and vivid hues, with thicker foliage and stronger scents. Autumn brings seed-pods, fruiting structures, reds, ambers, and golds, along with a subtle slowing of movement. Winter expression often strips Verdanni back toward bark, pale wood, frost-muted tones, or bare vinework.

These changes happen gradually and are not synchronized across all Verdanni. A community may show several seasons at once, depending on age, role, and personal inclination.

Facial Features and Hair

Verdanni faces are expressive, but unfamiliar. Their features are grown rather than sculpted, with smooth transitions rather than sharp angles. Eyes are typically dark, reflective, and deep-set, sometimes appearing like polished seeds or wet stone. Pupils are present, but less pronounced than in Humans.

Hair takes many forms. Some Verdanni grow leaf-fronds, soft grasses, flowering vines, or petal-like clusters instead of traditional hair. Others cultivate fibrous strands similar to moss or hanging lichen. Hair color often changes subtly with the seasons, though many Verdanni prune or braid their growth to maintain a consistent appearance when interacting with outsiders.

Ears tend toward elongated, leaf-like shapes, often veined or edged in lighter coloration. These ears are sensitive to vibration and airflow, contributing to the Verdanni’s strong environmental awareness.

Hands, Feet, and Texture

Verdanni hands are dexterous and strong, with fingers that may show bark ridges, vine seams, or petal layering. Their grip is firm without being crushing. Fingernails resemble hardened plant matter: seed-shells, thorn tips, or polished wood.

Feet are similarly varied. Some Verdanni retain humanoid feet, while others grow root-like structures that subtly widen under pressure. This gives them excellent balance and makes them difficult to knock prone.

Their overall texture varies by individual. Some feel smooth and cool, others rough and fibrous. Touching a Verdanni is never quite the same twice.

Internal Physiology

Internally, Verdanni do not possess organs in the mammalian sense. Instead, their bodies contain layered systems of channels that circulate sap, nutrients, and magical energy. Respiration occurs through a combination of lung-like cavities and slow absorption through skin and foliage.

They require water regularly, but not constantly. Verdanni can endure long periods without food if light and moisture are available. Conversely, they can eat and digest solid food when necessary, particularly plant matter and sugars.

Sleep is shallow and intermittent. Many Verdanni enter periods of stillness rather than full unconsciousness, remaining aware of their surroundings while resting.

Aging and Longevity

Verdanni age slowly, but not infinitely. Their bodies accumulate growth rings internally, marking years of life. As Verdanni age, their forms tend to become denser, more textured, and more distinctively plant-like.

Elders often show thicker bark, heavier branching patterns, or pronounced root structures. Unlike many Peoples, Verdanni do not fear visible age. It is a sign of survival, experience, and cultivation.

Scent, Sound, and Presence

Verdanni often carry faint natural scents: damp earth, crushed leaves, resin, flowers, or smoke. These scents shift subtly with mood and season, though most Verdanni learn to suppress or mask them in mixed company.

Their voices are calm and resonant, sometimes carrying a soft rustling undertone. When many Verdanni gather, the ambient sound resembles wind moving through a canopy rather than conversation.

Visual Identity and Cultural Choice

While Verdanni biology shapes their appearance, presentation is a cultural act. Verdanni prune, train, graft, and cultivate themselves deliberately. Appearance is not static. It is a statement.

Some Verdanni cultivate beauty to disarm.
Others cultivate austerity to intimidate.
Many cultivate neutrality to move unnoticed.

Whatever form they choose, it is rarely accidental.

A Verdanni body is not merely lived in. It is tended, shaped over time to reflect purpose, season, and intent.
