Tales of the Kampanni¶
π The Three Lanterns¶
The sky was once dark, and the moth-folk could not find their way.
So three sisters lit lanterns and hung them above the world.
The Silver Lantern shines bright, to guard the lost.
The Wandering Lantern flits quickly, to bring fortune.
The Pale Lantern glows faintly, to guide the dreamers.
They are never set down, for the sisters still carry them as they fly.
Lesson: No path is truly dark if you follow the light of kin.
β The Racing Stars¶
One night, the stars quarreled, each claiming to be the fastest.
They scattered across the sky, running this way and that.
The Kampanni laughed and said, βThe race is not who runs ahead, but who arrives together.β
The stars heard and clustered again, but from then on they never keep the same order twice.
Lesson: Companionship is greater than pride.
π―οΈ The Lantern That Was Never Snuffed¶
A caravan once lost its way in a storm. Winds tore their balloons, rain drowned their fires.
But one lantern burned on, carried by a child who sheltered it beneath her wings.
When dawn came, the Flights found each other by its glow.
To this day, no Kampanni will ever snuff a lantern, for the smallest light can guide a thousand wings.
Lesson: Protect even the faintest flame, for it may save many.
πͺΆ The Feather of Bright Blue¶
A dull bird was slain for food, but its chick bore feathers of bright blue.
The Kampanni spared it, raising it as kin. When grown, it circled the caravans, crying out whenever danger neared.
From then, they said, bright feathers are sacred, for within them lives a spark of magic.
Lesson: What is beautiful must be cherished, for it brings protection.
β‘ The Storm-Dance¶
A young mage dared to climb atop a vardo during a storm. Lightning struck, but instead of death, the sparks danced along his wings.
He leapt and twirled, and the lightning followed him, filling his charms with fire.
Since then, the Kampanni dance upon their roofs in storms, catching lightning for their journeys.
Lesson: Courage draws strength from danger.
π The Adoption Leap¶
Once, a wanderer wished to join a new Flight.
The Lead Wing said, βIf we catch you, you are ours. If we do not, the wind has rejected you.β
The wanderer leapt and was caught in many arms. He laughed, and they laughed with him, for he belonged.
Lesson: Trust is the bridge between wings.
π¦ The Butterfly Swarm¶
In the early days, the caravans feared they would be alone in the skies.
But one night, thousands of butterflies rose from the forests and flew alongside them, drawn to their lanterns.
The Kampanni knew then they would never travel without beauty at their side.
From that day, moths and butterflies have followed the Flights wherever they go.
Lesson: Beauty follows light, and light calls beauty.
